Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity."
- Melody Beattie
As we step into the new year, it's important to remember the tiny steps that got us here. Whether we like where we are or are looking for change in the year ahead, keeping note of the little things is a valuable to measure our progress. As many of us will no doubt set some lofty goals for the new year (which we should do), it's also important to remember the little things. Not all victories need be big ones. That said, taking a look at your current situation, what are some small steps that you can take to change where you are now to where you want to be? No matter how good or how bad things may be now, I believe that they can always get better; the bad can be corrected and the good can be improved! One way to improve our lives is to improve and sometimes change our outlook. In the years that I've been practicing group therapy, one the things clients say positively impacts their lives the most is, the daily practice of gratitude. And we always start small. We start by focusing on the smallest, seemingly most insignificant things we can be grateful for and build up from there. So, the January prompt is this: What are the smallest things you can be grateful for this month? A warm bed, running water, fresh sock, or the abundance of nature? Nothing is too small to note. You can track these little gratitude moments anyway you like, but I prefer good, old fashioned journaling. My favorite method is to just write three positive things that happened every day. Again, focusing on the small things. I'll link a free journal you can use, if you like, but any method will work. Have a fantastic January and look out for the little things!
